Garbage Pail Kids
New York, New York
Garbage Pail Kids were a series of collectible sticker cards created and produced by Topps throughout the 1980s. Their goal was to combine outrageous, grossout gags with spectacular artwork and over the top satire. The result was an inspired collaboration between avantgarde cartoonists and humorists including the likes of Art Speigelman, Mark Newgarden, John Pound, Tom Bunk and Jay Lynch. Blazing the trail for crude, vulgar potty humor, GPK as it was affectionately known, parodied pop culture before becoming a part of it. The twisted jokes ranged from the surreal to the downright disgusting nothing was offlimits, and the stickers were chock full of boogers, pimples, and fart jokes.
Each sticker featured a wideeyed Garbage Pail Kid suffering some embarassing or terrible fate. Key to their success were the characters names typically rich in hilarious, alliterative wordplay, kids scrambled to find their own name (or their friends) among them. The hapless gang of malformed misfits included Adam Bomb, Bony Tony, Nasty Nick, Potty Scotty and hundreds more. As the buzz spread, their popularity exploded all over the globe. Garbage Pail Kids became a true pop culture phenomenon loved by kids and often banned by squeamish parents and teachers. In 2003, Topps reintroduced the Garbage Pail Kids to a whole new generation of fans and the gang are once again making mischief with a series of all new stickers.
